We are pleased to open the 19th festival with this exciting, beautifully filmed adventure drama set in 19th century Morocco. Following the death of her mother, 11-year-old Zaïna must choose between her estranged father, who abandoned her and her mother, and her wealthy stepfather whom she blames for her mother's death. Chancing life with her father, Zaïna travels with his band of nomadic horsemen through the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech, where North Africa's most famous horse race takes place. Never far behind, her obsessive stepfather pursues her, determined to win her back. Winner of the Jury Award for Best Feature at the Pan-African Film Festival in 2007.
